for the next round? >> this wasn't just about performance. the obama folks think it's style and performs and and looking down instead of looking up. last night was about substance. looked at president obama and said you paid for obama-care by cutting $716 billion from medicare. you didn't have to do it. president obama had no answer. mitt romney said president obama you talk about a few tax breaks for the oil and gas industry. you have given much more tax breaks to the alternative energy energy and you have nothing to show for it. president obama just looked at him. at the end of the day barack obama couldn't engage on substance last night. the facts aren't going to get any better between thousand and the next two debates. the alternative energy market is not going to start working in the next two weeks. the obama economic policies aren't going to be working in the effect two weeks. it wasn't about style. it's about substance and obama not being able to stand on his own record. that record is not going to change between now and the next debate. martha: thank you for being with us today.

is a pollster for the obama campaign coming up in the next segment, who basically argues that in trying to reach out to, you know, the small number of undecided voters, to soccer mom s somewhere, had he been too negative, had he gone on the attack and called mitt romney a liar, that would have turned them off. do you buy that, david? >> no, i don't buy that. why would they be out making the arguments they're making today because they think they're effective today, why didn't they make them last night. i think gloria is exactly right. this is -- obama has had a very good campaign. he's got a very good team supporting him. but there is a tendency here for the president to sit on his lead. i think we saw that at the democratic convention. you know, the clinton speech was the highlight of that convention, not the obama speech. and here he came into this, i think he sat on his lead last night and what you learn in this game is the other guy and by the way, i disagree with gloria on one thing. i think this was a new mitt romney we saw last night. one we haven't seen before. i don't think he was ever a

about the next two. >> i think i would be worried about if i was in the obama campaign, deval patrick was on earlier, replaced governor romney in massachusetts, he was trying to maintain that obama won on substance but i don't think he won on any criteria. >> also, i got to tell you, go back and look at his closing remarks. it was rambling, it was disjointed, he seemed lost. lehrer, unfortunately for president obama, let him go on and ramble for well past the two minutes and the longer he went, the worse it became that he was clearly just unfocused. i think that hurt him. you know, piers, it's not so much what you say but it's how you come across to people. you've heard this all the time, i'm sure, in acting classes that 90% of communication is nonverbal. on the nonverbals, barack obama sent all the wrong messages. he lookepelant, he looked frustrated, he looked angry, he looked disinterested at times, and while he may have said some good things, it did not come across that way as a confident president who was proud of his record and had a vision for the country. just the opposite of

for the next four years they will be looking at this person. they know what obama is like. they know many people support him. at this point in time they don't know enough about romney and the specifics on his vision. he needs to lay some of that out. bill: in terms of specifics, maybe you hang one fact out there. i'm going to take the unemployment rate and do this with it. >> you have to be factual on those things. he laid out a tax plan without any details, what does that mean? bill: do you find most guys cheer their guy and boot other one? >> usually debates reinforce the side you are on. you look for the good points. center few people are totally neutral going in and it's not entertaining, it's educational. bill: that contradicts the point about saying maybe in the case of governor romney. there is a sliver of people saying i don't know enough about this guy. if he convinces me, he might get my vote. >> i think that's important. if the election were held by the polls he's a few points behind. he needs the debates to change the dynamics where people say this is a down to the wire race.

and they wanted. right now the cbo says up to 20 million people will lose their insurance as obama care goes into effect next year. and likewise a study of mckinsey and company of american businesses said 30% of them are at risk of being dropped. for those reasons, for the tax, for medicare, for this board and for people losing their insurance, this is why the american people don't want obama care. it's why republicans said do not do this, and the republicans had the plan. they put a plan out. they put a bipartisan plan. it was swept aside. i think something this big, this important, has to be done on a bipartisan basis. and we have to have a president who can reach across the aisle and fashion important legislation with the input from both parties. >> governor romney said this has to be done on a bipartisan basis. this was a bipartisan idea. in fact it was a republican idea. and governor romney at the beginning of this debate wrote and said what we did in massachusetts could be a model for the nation. and i agree that the democratic legislators in massachusetts might have given some advice
